For centuries, rivers across the UK and Ireland have been damaged by human activity. We’re giving communities the skills, knowledge, and confidence they need to be heroes for these important ecosystems. Together, we can revive natural processes and create vibrant habitats where wildlife can thrive.

Our rivers are in serious trouble. Of the many threats they face, one of the most widespread is the destruction of precious wildlife habitat – often due to straightening, damming, dredging, and deforestation. When communities come together to undo this damage, they can completely transform their local rivers. But first, they need to know how healthy the ecosystem is, what its future could look like, and how to gain the skills and expertise that will empower them to put their ideas into action.

Using brown trout as indicators of ecosystem health, we create habitat that benefits a huge diversity of wildlife and we empower others to do the same. Communities nationwide are keen to take action, and we help them to put that passion into practice. Drawing on data, research, and hands-on experience, we support them on their journey to become river champions. We want this practical, science-based guidance to be accessible to everyone, so that even more people can make a difference for nature.
