Empowering disadvantaged young women in a rural region of Northern Uganda by enabling community organisations, through our partner, Organisation for Community Action (OCA), to access and deliver vocational and enterprise skills training that reduces poverty and strengthens financial resilience.

Workaid and OCA have recently concluded an assessment of 10 women focused community-based organisations in Northern Uganda. Poverty is the most significant challenge affecting the target beneficiaries. Other issues facing women in these groups are gender-based violence, HIV related challenges, loss of parents and unemployment. Young women in rural communities are driven to quit formal education and into subsistence farming to feed their families and this reduces their ability to earn money.
By channelling investment into vocational training infrastructure, trainer development, organisational strengthening and entrepreneurship support, community groups can deliver more. This will enable these groups, under supervision and direction from OCA, to train more young women in key skills. By providing leadership, investment and access to good quality vocational training we will break the cycle of poverty and over reliance on subsistence farming by developing income generating skills.
