Until 2022 the gap in neonatal care in this part of rural Kenya meant that families had to travel up to 90km, on rough roads, to reach the nearest hospital with the necessary facilities, a highly risky journey for a fragile baby. Since neonatal treatment in Kenya isn't free, mothers were expected to pay, unless they had insurance, which many cannot afford. Families were often forced into debt or faced the unbearable prospect of going home without the urgent care their babies needed.
Since Dreamland Mission Hospital's Special Baby Unit opened in 2022 it has saved over 300 lives. We want to keep the Baby Unit fully staffed and equipped so that every premature or sick newborn can receive the specialist care they need at no cost to the family. Donor support covers the unit’s running costs, medicines, maternity hygiene packs, staff and equipment, allowing DMH to continue treating every baby needing help while protecting funds needed for other essential hospital services.
