In Sierra Leone, almost 96% of 10-year-olds are unable to read an age-appropriate text (Global Education Policy Dashboard, 2025). Despite education being free, many significant barriers still remain that limit children’s ability to access, retain and succeed in education. These include but are not limited to high rates of poverty, entrenched traditional gender norms, shortages of qualified teachers, and corporal violence - challenges which are compounded in rural areas.
EducAid responds by delivering high-quality education for 100 children at Maronka while strengthening education beyond the school itself. Children receive free education, nutritious meals, safe accommodation and access to extracurricular opportunities to build their confidence, skills and agency to shape their futures. As a role model school and training centre for EducAid’s projects, Maronka improves teaching and learning for children across Sierra Leone.
