Landmines are having a devastating effect across Myanmar, but no large-scale demining is taking place. This project will create best practice in local landmine clearance, owned by the community and under supervision of expert deminers so that people can return to their homes and lands.

Myanmar has had the highest number of landmine casualties in the world for two years running, yet no international demining organisations conduct landmine clearance in the country. In areas freed from Myanmar military control people are desperate to return to their land, to their homes, businesses and farms, but they have very limited resources to deal with this issue, often clearing landmines with sticks and pocket knives as their only equipment, resulting in preventable injuries and deaths.
In areas freed from military control, run by local administrations, demining is possible. We are supporting communities to address this issue for themselves without having to wait for international organisations to implement large-scale demining. Located in Karenni State, our pilot project establishes best practice in village-level landmine clearance involving the local community. The training is done by a former US Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal Officer and funds PPE, equipment and stipends.
