Dementia is the UK’s biggest killer and a worsening global health crisis. 1 in 3 people in the UK will develop it, with 3.9 million experiencing young onset dementia globally. Dementia robs people’s independence, dignity and financial stability, costs our economy £42 billion a year and puts unsustainable pressure on families and our healthcare system. Despite this, research funding is way behind other terminal conditions, leaving millions without a diagnosis, support or effective treatments.
BRACE backs early-stage projects that other funders overlook. We also support clinical trials, the Southwest Dementia Brain Bank (SWDBB), PhD researchers, and the Bristol Brain Centre. Our work focuses on understanding dementia, improving diagnosis and finding new treatments. Our approach works: our new diagnostic tool is in NHS trials, brain tissue from the SWDBB has underpinned breakthroughs, and several BRACE projects have received further, large-scale funding because of their discoveries.
