In low-income countries, drawing parallels with the Christmas story is still too easy. At the time of the Nativity, only the rich sought help in childbirth. Today, around 1 in 4 women in sub-Saharan Africa still give birth without skilled assistance. Give the gift of a safe birth this Christmas.

Having a baby should be a time of great joy and hope. Yet for too many women, pregnancy and childbirth remain life-threatening. Every 2 minutes, a woman dies from complications in pregnancy and childbirth, with 92% of maternal deaths occurring in low- and-middle-income countries. For many women, life-saving care is simply too far away. Delays in recognising danger signs, reaching a health facility and receiving treatment can turn a treatable complication into a tragedy for many mothers.

Maternity Worldwide uses an integrated approach to address both community and health facility issues women face when trying to access safe childbirth and quality maternity care. This includes income generation activities in villages, health promotion, skilled birth attendant training and the provision of equipment. We are currently prioritising the development of a new maternal health programme in Ghana and increasing the reach and impact of our work in Malawi and Uganda.
