The Gambia is one of the World’s poorest countries. Only 50% of its children have attended school before the age of 7 (State primary age). There is an acute shortage of good teachers at pre-primary level. Pupil attainment is poor - a recent IIEP-UNICEF study found that 96% of pupils were not 'ready' to start primary level. ‘Without strong foundational skills, children and their families have little hope of fulfilling their life ambitions and aspirations. This is a tragedy’ The Luminos Fund

We will help via a joint venture with UEG which aims to boost student development by providing them with places as class assistants at a GSS assisted community pre-primary schools. In 5 years the GSS network has grown from 1 to 15 schools, 120 to 2,200 pupils (age 2-7). To receive GSS assistance a school must adhere to best practice: 35 to a class, with qualified teachers, who must attend our training program, work with our coaches, have proper safeguarding, good governance and administration.
