People refused asylum in the UK are subjected to multiple traumas having fled war, torture, and persecution via treacherous journeys to seek sanctuary in the UK. Due to poor Home Office decision making and a lack of adequate legal representation, over 100 people each year in Sheffield then find themselves destitute and in crisis, with no right to work and no access to benefits, being increasingly marginalised and vilified in an unfamiliar country all while facing an uncertain future.
ASSIST currently supports between 70-80 adults in Sheffield who have been made destitute. At this critical point, we provide housing, cash welfare payments and bus passes to meet essential living needs and provide some immediate stability. We offer a casework and advocacy service to help people access health, social care and community. We also link people with the legal representation required to help people resolve their status in the UK and rebuild their lives in safety.
