The prison population has risen by 91% since 1990 and is projected to grow to 100,000 by 2030. The combination of overcrowding and understaffing due to shortages in prison staff, means people are locked in their cells for long periods of time, which can have a negative impact on mental health and wellbeing. The number of planned hours of education in public sector prisons in England has been cut by 25%, with staff made redundant, classes cut, and people with specific needs left without support.

With a rising population, opportunities for education, rehabilitation and support are more vital than ever. We will help people in prison to study from a choice of 100 distance learning courses, giving them the chance to study subjects that they are passionate about and help work towards future goals. We will give advice and support to help learners on their education journey. Our courses will provide people with qualifications, skills and a positive activity during the long hours spent in cell.
