Many prisoners leave behind families and children who are impacted by their sentences. Children of prisoners are less likely to achieve well at school and are at high risk of becoming offenders themselves. Where appropriate, maintaining family ties both reduces reoffending and helps reduce the harm experienced by children while their parent is in prison. Building relationships that emphasise a parent’s responsibility to their child can motivate prisoners to change their behaviour.

Family Days are extended visits for prisoners and their families. We offer books and volunteers to encourage choosing a book together. Sharing a book injects some normality into a strange and unsettling situation. Raising Readers is a targeted initiative that offers parents in prison the opportunity to choose a book for their child. They send a copy home with a personal message on a bookplate and keep a copy to read over the phone. This helps the parent model reading and maintains connection.
