Across East Africa, smallholder farmers have the ambition and knowledge to succeed, but over 90% lack access to formal credit, and even more to business support and fair markets. Without these, farmers stay trapped in subsistence farming, vulnerable to crop failure and economic shocks. The Seed & Scale Fund equips farmers, especially women and young people, with the savings, skills and market connections they need to build thriving businesses and lasting incomes.
The Seed & Scale Fund builds financial resilience by equipping farmers with business skills, financial literacy and market knowledge. Farmers form Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs) so they can save, access affordable credit, and connect to formal financing. Working across six East African countries, we strengthen cooperatives and market links so produce is sold at fair prices. We aim to work with 65% women to ensure the benefits are felt community wide.
