Action East Devon runs peer support groups offering a safe, welcoming space for young people facing mental health challenges. Rooted in East Devon’s communities, our Headlight groups help young people avoid crisis, manage their anxiety and stress, and rebuild their resilience and self-confidence.

Between January 2020 and October 2025, the number of children and young people in contact with NHS mental health services has more than doubled. But in 2025, the Children’s Commissioner identified a postcode lottery for care, showing that young people in Devon faced waits of over 200 days to get NHS help for their mental health. The latest NHS data suggests those waiting lists have got worse. Our community based groups offer early intervention for young people without access to other help.

Over 10 years of operation, we have developed community-based peer support groups which provide a safe space where young people can be open about the issues they face in a caring and non-judgmental setting. They are a place to talk, listen, and connect with others who understand what they’re going through. Our activities, ranging from cooking, art and music to challenges like photography and boxing, support young people and boost their wellbeing, self-confidence and social skills.
