Ndi Moyo, ‘the place giving life’, gives hope for those with cancers, HIV/AIDS & other painful diseases. As the only stand-alone hospice in Malawi, we aim to relieve pain & symptoms, bring life to remaining years & increasingly to train healthcare workers throughout Malawi in good palliative care.

Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world with a high prevalence of HIV/AIDS & related cancers. Most patients are diagnosed too late for cure & radiotherapy started only last year. Palliative care is still patchy in sub-Saharan Africa, with less than 1 in 20 of those in need receiving treatment. Many die in pain or anxiety about their children's future. Malawi aims to include palliative care in health provision but still has too few trained providers, particularly in rural areas.
Our patients are seen in clinics or at home and receive pain relief with low-cost medicines, such as oral liquid morphine, nutritional support, counselling and transport costs for those needing biopsies or chemotherapy. Children made vulnerable by parental illness are supplied with basic needs and school fees. Annual training courses for healthcare workers across Malawi, student placements, conference presentations and online case discussions all aim to disseminate this care more widely.
