Freedom of expression is a foundational right, meaning it is essential for the enjoyment and protection of all human rights. However, we are at a critical juncture. Democracies are failing, human rights are being eroded, and only 1 in 7 people live in countries where they can seek, receive, or share information safely. Respect for democratic principles and human rights protections is breaking down globally, both in authoritarian states and in countries considered traditional democracies.

Eradicating poverty, ending discrimination and tackling major issues from inequality to the climate crisis depends on people being able to shape the society they live in. ARTICLE 19 defends the twin rights of the Freedom to Speak and the Freedom to Know as they are the preconditions for inclusive societies. We serve as a bridge between power holders and the people to demand the safe exercise of our fundamental human rights. Together, we can safeguard the foundations of democracy and justice.
