People seeking sanctuary face severe challenges in the UK: a hostile asylum system, negative policies, harmful media narratives, and community tensions fueled by misinformation. This toxic combination prevents integration and compounds trauma for people who have already fled persecution. City of Sanctuary UK tackles these barriers by fostering understanding, changing narratives, and building support networks that transform the UK into a place where people can rebuild their lives with dignity.
We are building a movement of welcome. We support grassroots refugee community groups, equip advocates through our Speak Up For Sanctuary training, and work with schools, councils, universities and libraries to become accredited places of welcome. We connect people seeking sanctuary with their communities, turning empathy into action, ensuring everyone feels that they belong and are able to contribute.
