We’re on a mission to recover Nottinghamshire’s water voles and we need you to help us. This iconic species, once a familiar sight in rivers and canals, is at risk of becoming a myth. We’re creating more habitat for it to not just live in, but thrive, so that they can enrich landscapes once again.

The water vole was once common, found in almost every river and waterway in Nottinghamshire. Yet, in the last 30 years, habitat loss, pollution, climate change and predation have wreaked havoc on this iconic species and populations have crashed by over 90%. This means that the water vole is now one of the most threatened mammals in England and, sadly, on the verge of local extinction. We must take urgent action now, otherwise we risk losing this much-loved species forever.
Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust has a dedicated “Water Vole Recovery Project Team” who, for the last 3 years, have been turning the tide on species loss in the county. They have done this via a combination of removing mink, which preys on water voles, and extensive habitat restoration and creation, so that water voles have homes to feed, breed and live in.
