Lake Nabugabo is a poor rural community in the Masaka district (pop 297,000). It is reliant on subsistence farming and fishing. There are no local government primary schools, leaving vulnerable children with no education. Poverty drives child labour, exploitation and early marriage, especially for girls. Children lack stable homes, food security and healthcare. Without intervention, a lack of education will continue cycles of poverty, unemployment and safeguarding risks for future generations.
HUGE funds a free primary school for 140 children, 60% of whom are girls. Problems solved by provision of: 2 meals a day, healthcare/vaccinations and safeguarding support. Safe residential accommodation for those most at risk. Quality teaching to equip pupils to take PLE successfully and thereafter continue to secondary. school (funded by HUGE). High attendance rate An holistic education is transformational and breaks the long term cycle of poverty. Staff continue their education (paid by HUGE).
