Every child deserves a fair chance at life. But for those growing up in poverty, opportunities can feel out of reach. Our full-time coach-mentors support children to thrive. Through sport, mentoring and exposure to future pathways, young people build confidence, resilience and belief in themselves.

In every classroom across the UK, a staggering 9 children are living in poverty – in circumstances that limit opportunities and shrink life expectations. For young people growing up in poverty: • They are four times more likely to report a serious mental health condition by age 11 • 1 in 5 believe their life will amount to nothing • They are four times more likely to face fixed or permanent exclusion from school

Many interventions for young people in disadvantage focus on their problem behaviours and lack long-term impact. That’s why Greenhouse coach-mentors work in schools full-time for at least three years, delivering sport and mentoring guided by our Positive Youth Development approach. Placing emphasis on young people’s strengths and potential over time, rather than problems and deficits, leads to lasting behaviour change and improved confidence, wellbeing and academic attainment.
