1 in 4 mothers and birthing people experience mental health problems during or after pregnancy. At least half receive no support. Disadvantaged families fare the worst. MMHA is launching a new campaign to secure national commitments to make mental health care a guaranteed part of maternal care.

In the UK, you are 5x more likely to die by suicide after giving birth than during birth itself. Disadvantaged women and birthing people - young parents, Black and brown families, and those facing poverty, trauma or addiction - face higher risks and greater barriers to care. Maternal mental health is sidelined in a system that prioritises physical health care. Support is inconsistent, often inadequate, and no one holds the government or the NHS to account for change.
MMHA is a UK charity and collaborative network: 160 member organisations, 50 lived experience champions, and hundreds of experts and allies, united by one goal - equal mental health care for all mothers and birthing people. In 2027 we will launch a national campaign across all four nations, securing commitments to embed maternal mental health care across all health services, holding the government and the NHS to account, so care is consistent wherever and whoever you are.
