British people in prison abroad face severe hardship - poor conditions, overcrowding, limited food and clean water, isolation, and barriers to healthcare. Many do not understand their rights, struggle with the language, and have little contact with relatives. Families face emotional strain, practical difficulties and stigma. After release, many return to the UK with no money or housing and, without probation support, are at high risk of homelessness and reoffending.

Prisoners Abroad's three services work together to ensure people survive a sentence and can face the future with hope. In prison, grants pay for food and medical care, while language/reading materials and letter forwarding reduce isolation. Families gain practical and emotional support via helplines and support groups. On release, we help people access housing and vital services, gain employment skills, and reintegrate into society. We are the only UK charity providing this support.
