Malaria claims too many lives in Africa, where nearly all global cases and deaths occur. Climate change and resistance are making it harder to fight. Amref is turning the tide by bringing care closer to people: strengthening community/primary health systems and giving families tools to stay safe.

Although progress has been made toward global malaria elimination, Africa still bears an outsize burden, accounting for ~94% of cases and 95% of deaths worldwide, with 75% of deaths occurring in children under five. Progress made through mosquito nets use, better testing, and effective treatments is now under threat. Climate change is making malaria seasons longer and more intense, while growing resistance and reduced reliability of some rapid tests are making the disease harder to control.
Amref will strengthen primary healthcare systems in Africa to improve malaria prevention, diagnosis, treatment and tracking. It focuses on vulnerable rural groups by bringing services closer to where they live. The approach includes raising community awareness, improving supplies of medicines and tools, strengthening local accountability, advocating for more funding, using better data for decision-making, and working across sectors to address malaria, including links to climate change.
