It is estimated that over half (55%) of women prisoners are mothers, yet many do not have contact with their children and are often unaware of their parental rights. They are usually ineligible for Legal Aid and face many hurdles to represent themselves. NBR works to ensure all mothers in prison can access free legal advice to regain contact with their children. We are the only charity to provide this service, and without us, the mothers have nowhere else to turn.

We hold free legal clinics in women’s prisons, supporting around 150 mothers each year. We partner with twelve law firms that provide over 300 volunteer lawyers to attend the clinics and work on the clients’ cases, supervised by a specialist family lawyer at NBR. We also work with 150 Family Law barristers who volunteer to represent our clients in court.
