Budaka District (pop 220,000, half living below the $3.00 UN poverty line,)is identified by Local Govt as lacking development. Local people are subsistence farmers; with deforestation/declining soil fertility, food insecurity is widespread. Over 50% of households eat only once a day; a further 15% often have days without food. With 40% of the population under 9, child malnutrition and stunting are rife. Income diversification is urgently needed, but people lack resources and knowledge
The project will set up and nurture 8 new Village Savings and Loan groups.280 people mainly women, will be able to save and earn interest, providing some protection for their households from health, economic or climate shocks. Many will also borrow from group funds to invest in income generating activities to improve their livelihoods. by expanding or starting a micro business This money might also be used for school fees, buying seed or plants, or expanding or starting a micro business
