Mental health problems in children (affecting 1 in 5) include anxiety, depression, ADHD, and autism spectrum disorders. For the individual child, this can mean intense sadness, excessive worry and withdrawal from family and friends often leading to a decline in school performance, refusal to attend or exclusion. For the wider community, childhood mental health problems can manifest in rising economic inactivity among young adults and a cycle of poverty.

The calming presence of the animals and open, green spaces at Amelia Trust Farm help to reduce anxiety and stress so the children/young people feel more comfortable to interact with staff and develop the behavioural, emotional and social skills required for learning. The nurturing environment coupled with a proven structure of varied activities enables the young people to re-engage with education, gain qualifications and move into training, college or employment.
