REACH Bwindi supports Bwindi Community Hospital (BCH), in rural south west Uganda. All our trustees have worked or volunteered at BCH. Our funding priority is primary care in the community served by the hospital. One project we support is Youth Friendly Services at the hospital and in the community.

Uganda has one of the world's youngest populations, with about half the population aged under 18 years. The teenage pregnancy rate is around 25%. Young people can find it particularly difficult to access health services, because of lack of resources, but also because the conventional delivery of services can be off-putting (e.g. attending a service where neighbours or relatives might see you). Additional barriers for young people near BCH are the hilly terrine and poor public transport links.

From 2016 we worked alongside BCH to establish a free Youth Friendly Clinic at the hospital providing confidential comprehensive primary healthcare. This has recently expanded to include community outreach clinics in a number of villages to address the problem of young people not being able to access hospital services due to lack of funds or transport. There has been a huge increase in numbers accessing services. We would like to continue to fund this project in 2027.
