Seeds are the heart of our global food system. Corporate food production has decimated the number of cultivated plant varieties from 30,000 to just 170, with 75% of our food coming from only 12 crops. Farmers no longer have control over the seeds they grow. And, bought new each year, seeds no longer pass on genes adapted to diverse local conditions. While agro-industrial corporations thrive in this monocultural world, our fields are increasingly susceptible to failure.
By placing seeds back in the hands of growers, rather than the four corporations controlling 60% of global seed, we can revive the climate and community resilience of farmer-led food systems. Each with their hands in UK soils, our Seed Sovereignty Programme coordinators are reskilling food producers in commercial seed production, strengthening regional and national seed networks, reviving heritage and endangered crop varieties, and retraining growers to save seed adapted to their bioregions.
