All 18 resident UK bat species are unique and they play a vital role in the environment - as they can help keep populations of insects in balance and they are a sign of a happy and healthy environment. However, they are still under threat, often misunderstood and seen as a nuisance. As a result, 4 of the 18 UK bat species are at the risk of being extinct, 2 are near threatened and a further 3 are so poorly understood we don't know how much at risk they are.

The Bat Conservation Trust is the leading non-governmental organisation in the United Kingdom solely devoted to the conservation of bats and the landscapes on which they rely. Through our evidence-based, collaborative and inclusive values we want to continue our work to learn more about bats so we can better protect them. We can't do it alone, so we want to continue to raise awareness of the wonders of bats and inspire more people to take action to protect them, in any way they can.
