Building on the reintroduction of white storks, this project looks ahead to the growth of a secure population, boosting biodiversity, access to nature and community wellbeing. We will support communities to engage with stork recovery and seek out opportunities to restore wetland habitats.

At Willington Wetlands, we have created a safe environment for their nest, but as the population grows, they will face long journeys to find nearby wetland homes and may leave Derbyshire for good. Derbyshire is suffering from limited, poor-quality wetlands and has experienced flooding every year since 2019 (exceeding or approaching 1 in 100 year levels) and increasingly frequent droughts (2011, 2013, 2018, 2020, 2022, 2023) impacting the landscape and community wellbeing.
White storks are charismatic wetland ambassadors. Returning to the same nest over 30-40 years, they inspire human connection that is celebrated across Europe, recognised for inspiring community wellbeing and nature protection. We aim to support communities in restoring wetland sites across the landscape, monitoring and protecting the growing white stork population.
