The Cheetah is classed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, with numbers having plummeted from 100,000 in the 20th century to just 7,100 today. Now only occurring in 9% of their historical range. cheetahs face many threats, incl human wildlife conflict (HWC), illegal pet trade, poor genetic diversity and difficulties with captive breeding. We are part of the EAZA Southern cheetah Ex situ Programme (EEP) which manages the captive gene pool in Europe and need improved facilities for breeding/care.
We will build a new cheetah breeding facility to contribute to the Southern cheetah EEP, enabling us to provide specialist care in line with international animal welfare regulations (nutrition, veterinary care, enrichment). We will develop educational programs to encourage behaviour change for sustainable living, incl the Wildlife Watcher: Camera Trap Loan Scheme in collaboration with the CCF. We will support CCF in combating HWC, raise awareness with communities, rescue and rehabilitation.
