The Orchard Project will plant four new community orchards in urban areas within the UK and provide training to local volunteers to help establish these habitats ensuring they thrive for years to come - providing local fruit harvests and increasing orchard habitat and biodiversity in our cities.

We address the loss of orchards, green space and the deepening disconnect between people, nature and food. Traditional orchards have declined by around 80% since the 1900s, and by up to 90% in London, with vital skills and knowledge disappearing along with them. At the same time, communities face social isolation, climate anxiety and poor access to quality green space. We work with local communities to plant, restore and care for orchards, building biodiversity, skills and long-term stewardship.
We bring orchards into the heart of urban communities, working in partnership with schools, local authorities, community groups and landowners. Our aim is for everyone in cities across the UK to be within walking distance of a thriving, community-run orchard. Community orchards provide ecological, cultural and social value. They are recognised as ‘Priority Habitats’ by Natural England and DEFRA, making them vital for biodiversity, while also creating inclusive and resilient community spaces.
