Whales and dolphins are under growing pressure from marine pollution, overfishing, habitat loss, and vessel strikes. Ship strikes alone kill up to 20,000 whales annually, and with global shipping traffic set to triple by 2050, vulnerable populations already recovering from whaling face escalating risk. Urgent action is needed to protect them before it’s too late.
ORCA train expert citizen scientists to use ferries, freight, and cruise ships as “platforms of opportunity” to monitor whales and dolphins, their behaviour, and the threats they face. This approach turns shipping companies into active partners in conservation, reducing collision risk whilst building a growing evidence base to inform safer shipping for safer oceans.
