Around 620,000 people in GM are reportedly experiencing poverty, food insecurity being a key indicator. They are making choices, even in low income families where parents are employed, between heating and eating. Over one third are children and young people. Meanwhile, obesity is an issue. At the same time, there are over 12 million tonnes of food including lots of fresh produce, going to waste. We capture good food and seek to redistribute to groups who help those facing greatest hardship.
FareShare GM (FSGM) will identify more VCFSE organisations, schools, housing associations, local authority and public health agencies with venues where we can work together to redistribute 'Veg Bags' plus recipes, hacks for preparing healthy, tasty, nutritious meals, on a tight budget. We will also develop a network of community 'Real Food Champions' to provide support and assistance, through community centres, cookery demonstrations, equipment and info sharing, plus ongoing support.
