Temperate rainforest once covered around 20% of the UK, but today less than 1% remains. These globally rare habitats create unique microclimates that support an extraordinary diversity of life—lichens, mosses, ferns, and wildlife, some found only in Cumbrian woodlands. Yet they face severe threats from invasive species, tree disease, air pollution, and climate change. Without urgent restoration and active management, we risk losing these ecosystems, and the species that depend on them, forever.
We will restore 72 acres of Lake District temperate rainforest, boosting biodiversity, storing carbon, and protecting a rare ecosystem. Our plans include habitat assessments, species monitoring, halo thinning, glade creation and invasive species control. By sharing best practice and engaging volunteers through training and events, we’ll inspire communities and future leaders to ensure resilient rainforests for generations.
