The equivalent of 23 pieces of litter are dropped every second in the UK. Authorities spend over £800 million a year on clearing litter but it remains a crisis, harming people, pets, wildlife and water quality, degrading our environment and increasing fear of crime. Deprived areas are disproportionately affected. Litter contributes to ill-health, social isolation and economic disadvantage in our neighbourhoods.
Research shows British people need the psychological & physical capability, social opportunity and motivation to litter pick. CleanupUK works in, and with, local littered communities, providing free equipment, partnering with local community groups, engaging with volunteers and creating educational materials to bring people together to form volunteer litter-picking groups. We have fun, meet new people, take care of, and build pride in our areas. Through empowerment, we create positive change.
