The Shark Trust’s Great Eggcase Hunt engages people around the world to find and record shark and skate eggcases. Over half a million records now reveal where these species reproduce. With your support, we can unlock patterns in this data to better reveal and protect vital egg-laying habitats.

Citizen scientists have recorded over half a million shark and skate eggcases, revealing broad patterns of distribution, especially around the British Isles. However, much of the deeper insight remains untapped. Without focused analysis, we risk missing seasonal, environmental, and habitat-linked patterns that are critical for identifying vulnerable egg-laying areas and informing effective conservation.
We will analyse existing eggcase records to identify seasonal trends, environmental drivers (including storms and currents), and habitat associations linked to shark and skate egg-laying. At the same time, we will improve reporting systems and develop new resources to support and grow our network of Eggcase Champions, increasing high-quality data collection above and below the water.
