We work to protect the wildlife of South Georgia, a UK Overseas Territory famed for its penguins, seals and whales. Through this appeal, you will help to fill gaps in our knowledge about populations of key species across the island – crucial for the future conservation of these very special animals.

Fieldwork on South Georgia is logistically challenging and expensive. As a result, there are significant gaps in what we know about South Georgia’s wildlife, with some population estimates now decades out of date. A more accurate picture will help manage South Georgia’s protected areas, both on land and at sea – protecting vital krill stocks, which sustain so much life in the Southern Ocean, and mitigating emerging threats such as climate change, avian influenza and increasing vessel traffic.
With your help, we will establish South Georgia WildCounts - a collaborative wildlife monitoring programme to inform future conservation of this unique ecosystem. In 2025, we brought together 60 international scientists to decide which species, sites and technologies to prioritise. Drones, remote cameras and satellite imagery are transforming how wildlife monitoring is delivered. Opportunities for international collaboration and data sharing have never been greater. We can’t wait to get started.
