Since 2002, FareShare Sussex & Surrey has rescued good quality surplus food from going to landfill and creating unnecessary Co2e emissions, instead redistributing it as nutritious meals supporting vulnerable people facing hunger across our communities.

The UK is facing two connected crises: climate breakdown and hunger. Annually, 4.6 million tonnes of edible food is wasted,10 billion meals, driving greenhouse gas emissions and worsening the climate emergency, with the food system contributing to 30% of the UK's emissions. Simultaneously,14.1 million people are in food poverty. Waste occurs at every stage, from production and transport to retail and disposal, when food goes to landfill it creates more harmful emissions and environmental damage.

By preventing landfill use, we cut the environmental impact of food waste, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, shrink the food system's carbon footprint, and optimise resources like water, energy, and land already embedded. We support food-insecure communities by prioritising food for hungry people. Unsuitable food goes to community composting or responsible waste. As climate and budget pressures grow, we deliver immediate food waste solutions with long-term environmental gains and key social impact
