Problems in our local area include: a lack of performing opportunities for amateur musicians, particularly in a chamber music context. Difficulty accessing classical music in major venues, whether due to difficulties with transport (expense, disability, age), perception of elitism or other barriers to access. It's hard for schools to provide high-level performing opportunities for children. Limits to Music Hub funding meaning core work is prioritised over potentially lifechanging one-off events.
Creating multiple ways to reach young people and adults: PlayFest offers performances on the Festival stage for fantastic local amateur musicians of all ages. World-class performances in friendly local venues, made accessible with ticket schemes & ease of travel. Workshops & performances alongside top professional ensembles & orchestras offered to all local school children with Merton Music Foundation. We support MMF in their one-off events like Royal Albert Hall performance for 1,500 children.
