AFFs showcase presents powerful new work by emerging visual artists facing socio-economic, mental or physical health barriers to building creative careers. It will provide fair access to visibility, networks and professional opportunity whilst reshaping who the arts are for and who they are made by.

Emerging artists from underrepresented backgrounds face major systemic barriers: only 8% of UK artists come from working-class or low-income backgrounds, 29% receive no career support, and 59% rely on informal networks. High-quality exhibitions often rely on unpaid labour and favour those with wealth or connections. This creates a cycle of exclusion, where privilege—not talent—determines who succeeds, limiting diversity, innovation, and long-term sustainability in the UK's cultural sector.
AFF's showcase provides a fully supported opportunity for disadvantaged emerging artists, offering curatorial guidance, high-quality professional development and network building. Artist Fellows present work to national and international audiences, while a public panel explores sustaining creative careers. This amplifies diverse voices, strengthens talent pipelines, fosters inclusive participation and demonstrates equitable, sustainable practices across the arts sector promoting social mobility.
