It's a dirty secret that Scotland's waters are routinely polluted with sewage from sewer overflows and sewage sludge spread on farmland. Help us work with communities to use their environmental rights, hold polluters to account and press the Scottish Government to clean up.

Sewage pollution is dangerous to people and nature. Sewer overflows were designed as a failsafe but are now used routinely to spill billions of litres of untreated sewage each year. At the same time, the toxic sewage sludge spread on farmland leaches into waterways, contaminating the soil on its way. Scotland's environmental regulations are not always enforced and do not go far enough. Communities across Scotland are feeling ignored and unable to seek environmental justice. This needs to change.
We support people to use the law to protect the environment and their health, including free legal advice. Parallel to this, we advocate for policy and law reform - informed by our Environmental Justice Network of environmental human rights defenders. We will push for: • Making pollution visible with better monitoring • Stronger standards and regulations to stop routine pollution • Improving law enforcement to hold polluters to account • Sustainable infrastructure and upstream solutions.
