Low-lying and managed by a complex drainage system and sea defences, the North Somerset Levels and Moors are particularly vulnerable to climate threats. Increased drainage and agricultural intensification over the past 50 years has caused severe habitat degradation, leaving species isolated and vulnerable to the impact of rising sea levels, floods and droughts. At the same time, nature connection is at an all-time low and mental health issues are increasing. We urgently need to reverse this.
Restoring Ebdon Farm’s coastal floodplain grazing marsh will provide crucial inland roosts for coastal birds during high tides and storms. Creating scrapes, ponds, ditches and wet woodlands could form a vital stepping stone for species to move safely between the Severn Estuary and the Mendip Hills. We will create dedicated spaces for the community, learning and volunteering in nature in an area that currently lacks nature-rich, accessible visitor sites.
