Our islands – Skomer, Skokholm and Middleholm – are sanctuaries for internationally important seabird populations. But, with increasing pressures on these species, it’s more important than ever to monitor their populations so we can do all we can to protect them and their environment.

Seabirds are facing a myriad of threats on land and sea, with many species in rapid and sustained decline. We need long-term data to be able to monitor their population trends. Without this information we can’t assess how species are faring or whether our conservation work is effective. Without a skilled team and the right resources, these surveys can’t go ahead, and we risk losing important insights into the state of our seabirds.
It’s essential we complete our annual surveys to get an accurate picture of how seabirds are faring both locally & nationally, to better inform our work to protect them. This includes staff & volunteers counting the populations of Puffins, Manx Shearwaters, Fulmars, Guillemots & Razorbills on Skomer & Skokholm. We’re also aiming to expand our survey efforts to Middleholm, a new island under our care. We can compare this data to previous population counts & feed into the national picture.
