The Rothbury Estate offers a once-in-a-generation chance to protect vital habitat for at-risk species like the cuckoo. Together we can secure these 3,800 hectares of moorland, woodland and wetland to restore wildlife, support local communities and create one of England’s largest areas for nature.

Once the herald of spring, the common cuckoo has declined sharply by 71% in England since the 1990s. Driven by habitat loss, declining insect populations and climate pressures, its call is being silenced. The Rothbury Estate is a crucial stronghold for cuckoos. If sold in pieces to multiple buyers, its rich mosaic of habitats could be broken up, driving wildlife decline. The chance to create a 40-mile wildlife corridor would be lost for generations. There’s no time to lose to secure it.
By securing The Rothbury Estate, The Wildlife Trusts can safeguard crucial habitats where cuckoos and other threatened species can thrive. Working with the local community we’ll restore natural processes and give hope to declining wildlife. With support for regenerative farming, we’ll reverse the loss of nature. Putting people at the heart of the project, we’ll protect public access. The Rothbury Estate will become the linchpin of a 40-mile wildlife corridor across the North of England.
