There are approx 9,375 adults with learning disabilities in Bristol (2025) forecast to increase to 9,740 by 2030. People with learning disabilities can face exclusion and stigmatisation, which leads to feelings of isolation, poor mental health and wellbeing. Over 50% of disabled people report feeling lonely, rising to 77% for those aged 18-34. Vital support for people with learning disabilities is under threat due to rising costs and government costs, and must be protected.

Misfits are a unique Bristol-based theatre group, led by our members - People with Learning Disabilities. Each year we reach 180+ people who face loneliness, isolation and exclusion from mainstream arts provision. We provide safe, supportive space for them to connect, share their stories and their unique perspectives. Our work gives our members a platform to increase their confidence, express themselves, have a voice and challenge the perceptions of people with learning disabilities.
