Heathlands support a diverse and sometimes unique range of flora and fauna including ground-nesting birds, insects, amphibians and reptiles. By restoring it we can help boost biodiversity, reunite disconnected landscapes and prevent rare species from disappearing.

Up to 85% of the UK’s heathlands have been lost in the last 200 years making them one of our rarest and most threatened habitats. By re-establishing these areas in Shropshire, we will protect and enhance these special habitats and the species that will make them their home. More carbon will be locked into the soil and managing heather, gorse and bramble will create firebreaks and reduce wildfire risks.

We will actively manage heathland by removing dominant and mature vegetation to keep them in favourable condition. Biodiversity is a critical consideration in the management of lowland heathlands. We will promote this biodiversity and maintain open heathland habitat by using a combination of vegetation management and removal techniques.
