Bexhill’s Big Summer Sounds (BBSS) will bring the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) to Bexhill, introducing new audiences to classical music. Workshops & work placements will enable 210 school children & young people aged 16-25 from low-income backgrounds to change their lives through music.

Children & young people living in Bexhill lack opportunities to see the power of live music first-hand, and chances to learn new skills. 93% of children in state schools are excluded from arts education due to lack of funding (Centre for Young Lives/Child of the North), with uptake of GCSE arts subjects falling by 34% between 2015 & 2024. DLWP serves 6 of the 20% most deprived areas nationally. In Bexhill, 29% of children live in poverty, and the crime rate is 3.4% higher than county average.
Workshop programmes and work placements will enable 210 school children & young people aged 16-25 from low income backgrounds to take part in hands-on roles during Bexhill’s Big Summer Sounds. Children from Bexhill schools will sing alongside the RPO at Sidley Festival. 30 work placements will boost confidence and give industry level experience for young people at risk of unemployment in Bexhill. State educated members of RPO will give talks to young people, demystifying career paths.
