About 80% of the UK’s Northern Brown Argus is now confined to Scotland. Once widespread in northern England, it relies on species-rich grassland, one of the UK’s most biodiverse but threatened habitats. By working with farmers and landowners, we can secure a future for this beautiful species.

Species-rich grasslands are home to a diverse range of wildlife, including the beautiful Northern Brown Argus butterfly. Since 1990 the UK distribution of the Northern Brown Argus has plummeted by a sobering 56% due to habitat loss. With 97% of the UK’s meadows lost since 1930, and high-quality grasslands now accounting for less than 1% of UK land cover, we must take action.

There is hope in the rolling hills of the Scottish Borders, where 40% of the UK’s Northern Brown Argus population is concentrated. However, with many landowners turning to non-native commercial forestry as an option, time is running out. We must urgently engage farmers to support these often overlooked habitats, and advise them on the benefits of grassland restoration. With funding only partially secured for a six-year project, we must also raise additional funds to complete this work.
