Calthorpe is seeking support to restore our much-loved wildlife garden, one of the few natural refuges in this part of London. With Big Give Earth Raise funding, we will create ponds and habitats using recycled materials, boosting biodiversity, conserving water and widening community access.

Urban biodiversity is under severe pressure as habitats disappear and communities become disconnected from nature. Calthorpe’s wildlife garden is a rare green refuge, but its ecological resilience and public access are limited. The existing pond is vulnerable to climate stress, water loss and high maintenance needs. Without investment, opportunities to support wildlife, conserve water and engage local people in environmental stewardship will remain limited.
We will replace a single large pond with a resilient network of smaller ponds made from recycled materials, linked by shallow channels to support aquatic life. Rainwater-fed systems, bog planting, deadwood habitats and pollinator-friendly plants will boost biodiversity while conserving water. Volunteers and local residents will help design and build the space, supported by educational signage that explains sustainable practices and inspires environmentally responsible behaviour.
