sixTeen is a powerful true story of working-class teenage girls who find their voice and fight back against authority during the miners’ strike. Your support will help the play to reach audiences in former coalmining areas and allow those communities to share their stories.

Many former mining communities face cultural isolation and limited arts access. There’s talent in these towns but a lack of opportunity. Stories of working-class women and older generations are often overlooked. When sixTeen played to a sold-out crowd in a former mining town labelled 'left behind' the people told us they feel actively excluded from the cultural conversation. With mainstream stage and screen still low on working-class representation, sixTeen puts these voices front and centre.
sixTeen will tour into community spaces across East Midlands, Yorkshire and North East, telling the untold stories of working-class women and girls during the miners’ strike. Through post show discussions, we'll collect the audiences' responses to the play as audio stories to ensure these voices aren’t lost. sixTeen is made by a 100% working-class team, developed through New Perspectives’ Open Pitch programme supporting first-time East Midlands artists to develop and share personal stories.
